How to Check for Signs of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer can strike women of any age, as has sadly been seen with Kylie Minogue, who developed cancer at 37. It is important for women to regularly check their breasts for any changes, lumps and swellings. If any are found it is so important to seek early help from your General Practitioner.

Checking For Changes In Your Breasts

Stand topless in front of your mirror with your hands hanging loosely at your sides. Look at your breasts for any changes from their normal appearance. Now put your hands on your hips and lean slightly forward. Again look for any signs of abnormality.

Now put your hands behind your head and gently turn from side to side. Your nipples should move up and down at the same time.

Now raise your left arm, feel your right breast with your flat right hand, pressing down firmly enough so that you feel the tissue underneath. Move around the whole of your breast, working in a circular motion. This can be done in the bath or shower. You should check the whole breast, the nipple and under and around your armpit area. Now repeat this with your other breast. Once you have checked both breasts this way you should lie down and repeat the checks.

Changes In Your Breasts That May Indicate Cancer That Should Be Reported To Your GP

Any changes to your breast should be reported as soon as possible to your Doctor. Some lumps may be part of your regular monthly cycle changes, others may be innocent cysts. If in any doubt about changes you should check these with your GP. Some surgeries have nurses who will happily advise you and help teach you how to check for changes. Due to the monthly cycle changes you have it is best to examine your breasts at the same time each month so that abnormalities can be spotted. One week after your period is the best time to do this monthly check.

In particular you should report:

• Any changes to your nipple size, discharge or movement. The best way to look for discharge from the nipple is to observe it as you give it a gentle squeeze.

• Any changes to your breast size. For example if one breast becomes larger or lower

• A rash on your nipple or breast or changes to the skin such as discolour, dimples or dents. One sign of breast cancer could be a change in the shape of the nipple or if it should become inverted.

• A lump, bump, swelling or any change to your breast and armpit area.

• A rash to the nipple area or breasts.

• Puckering or dimpling around the nipple.

• Swelling under the armpit or around the collarbone could be a sign of breast cancer and should be reported to your doctor.

• Any pain in the breast or armpit area.

Early detection means early treatment and a greater chance of survival.

One in nine women in the UK will develop breast cancer.

You may wish to do all of the above with your partner to involve him and he may know his way around your breasts better than you and spot any changes! It will also give you an opportunity to check his testicles for abnormalities and signs of testicular cancer such as lumps, swelling or pain.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month usually takes place in September each year and as a way of supporting breast cancer charities shops sell a range of tickled pink items such as t-shirts, bags, ribbons and pens with the Tickled Pink logo.

In September 2007 American scientists from the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in California released findings of their research study that women who drink more than three alcoholic drinks a day have an increased chance of almost a third of developing signs of breast cancer later in life. The same figure has previously been revealed to be the same for women who smoke over one packet of cigarettes each day. Women who drink one or two alcoholic drinks each day were revealed to have a 10% increased risk of developing signs of breast cancer.
